Austrian Red Trio, Mixed
a Mixed FlightFor the past couple of decades the dedicated winemakers of Austria have been feverishly working to bring the quality of their red wines up to match that of their world-class white and dessert wines. In recent years their hard work has begun to bear fruit, as Austrian reds began to climb the charts toward international acclaim. They scored well in tastings, became recognized by the important international journalists, and found an ever-growing and loyal fan base.
All three Austrian reds in this flight come from this country’s foremost region for red wines, Burgenland. The first of the three features the very Austrian variety Blaufrankisch, a grape known for its spice and berry glories, a flavor which combines the spiciness of Syrah, the tannin structure of Nebbiolo and the lovely fruit of Pinot Noir. This prime example of a Blaufrankisch comes from the esteemed MORIC project from winemaker Roland Velich.
The second wine in this flight features the other very Austrian variety Zweigelt, a crossing of Blaufrankisch and St.Laurent, which is often compared to a Syrah/Shiraz, and comes from the 100% Biodynamic Umathum estate.
The third, from Winzerkeller Andau (which consistently produces great versions of all of the most important grapes of Austria) is a St.Laurent that offers yet another example of a grape variety deeply connected to Austria’s centuries-old winemaking culture. The finicky St. Laurent variety has only recently been rediscovered by growers that are not deterred by its susceptibility to problems in the vineyard. Luscious and velvety on the palate, this St Laurent pleases with dark berry notes and its rich and undulant texture.
