Pannobile is the name for a group of eight wineries from this region whose individual goals are the same: to create wines that are powerful, multilayered, dense and fruity; a goal which is achieved in part by aging the wine in oak barrels. The name is a symbol for what they call “wines with a profile,” and is generally given to the flagship wine of each winery. This Pannobile red from the Gsellmann brothers is a cuvee of 70% Zweigelt, 15% Blaufrankisch and 15% Merlot grapes. It was aged for 14 months in small oak barrique.

Ratings and Raves

Wine Enthusiast 86 - “The unique combination of chocolate and spice in the aromas of this wine calls to mind chocolate Teddy Grahams, but its by no means a kiddie wine. ItÃ?³ full-bodied and soft, with flavors of tobacco, earth and spice and a smoky, coffee-like note on the finish. A blend of Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch and Merlot.”
Falstaff Wine Guide 89
A la Carte 88 - “Beautiful nougat/chocolate/fruit notes; juicy; dense with a good bite.”
Wine Plus 88-90 - “Excellent. Sweet and roasted aromas of preserved plums and a hint of rum pot. Quite juicy fruit. It is still young but has good acidity and delicate and ripe tannins. A lot of wood, a strong body, good fat on the palate, increasing presence, and sweet wood notes in the finish.”
