“The aromas you get here that are so much stronger when compared to Gruner Veltliner is because a Gruner has more body and a Riesling is slimmer on the palate. One would assume that when you have a ripe, low acid year as in 2003 that there wouldn’t be enough acid for long cellaring. However, the very little amount of acid that is there is enough for the wine to keep and in fact the physiological ripeness of the grapes lends itself to great aging potential. The wine will eventually slim down meaning that the alcohol which gives the wine its chubby feeling will integrate. This makes it feel like its body is slimming down and the fruits then come to the foreground and the taste becomes more multilayered. And then, in fact, the acidity comes back. These 2003 wines are going to be very very good.” -Vintner Josef Hogl

“Smaragd” is the name for full-bodied wines given by the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus, a distinguished collective of regional vintners. The word literally means “emerald” and is a reference to the color of the tiny green lizards which run amok in the vineyards here.

Ratings and Raves

Wine Enthusiast 88 - “Starts with scents reminiscent of honey, ripe apples and pears and even hints of peach, then gains complexity on the palate, picking up additional notes of spice and mineral. Verges on full-bodied, with the weight carrying over on the long, slightly oily finish.”
Falstaff Wine Guide 92-94 - “Light yellow-green; the nose delivers very fresh stone-fruit aromas, white fruit; the palate is racy and delightful, very expansive; the superb length is echoed by yellow fruit; already very well developed.”
A la Carte 90 - “A little restrained, the nose needs time. Clean citrus fruit, soft yet spicy ending in suble acerbity. This wine needs time. Classy stone fruit brilliance; ethereal yet dense, a wine made for meditation.”
Food & Wine Magazine Wine Guide 2 - “2 out of 4 stars: Very good, distinctive. The weight of the warm 2003 season is felt in the ripe pear flavors of this wine. Drink now-8 years.”
