“The aromas you get here that are so much stronger when compared to Gruner Veltliner is because a Gruner has more body and a Riesling is slimmer on the palate. One would assume that when you have a ripe, low acid year as in 2003 that there wouldn’t be enough acid for long cellaring. However, the very little amount of acid that is there is enough for the wine to keep and in fact the physiological ripeness of the grapes lends itself to great aging potential. The wine will eventually slim down meaning that the alcohol which gives the wine its chubby feeling will integrate. This makes it feel like its body is slimming down and the fruits then come to the foreground and the taste becomes more multilayered. And then, in fact, the acidity comes back. These 2003 wines are going to be very very good.” -Vintner Josef Hogl
“Smaragd” is the name for full-bodied wines given by the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus, a distinguished collective of regional vintners. The word literally means “emerald” and is a reference to the color of the tiny green lizards which run amok in the vineyards here.
