Zweigelt, a red wine grape planted widely in Austria, is from a crossing of the Blaufrankisch and St.Laurent grapes, but has the personality of a full-bodied Syrah (AKA Shiraz). Food and Wine Magazine described it as “dense, dark wines that somehow manage to come across as pleasantly weightless.” The Mitterjoch Zweigelt, from one of the oldest Zweigelt vineyards at the Braunstein winery, fits the profile perfectly: deep ruby in color with soft violet reflections. It has fresh notes of wild cherry and is fat and charming on the palate. It spent a year in oak barriques, and can spend a long time in your cellar as well.
