Give Dad Some Wine

Why buy another tie? Give Dad what he really wants - a great bottle (or bottles) of wine for this Father’s Day
Dad wants wine. He wants a wine that will surprise him and stand up to his BBQ better than beer or lemonade. He wants a wine that will taste great with his filet mignon and his lobster tail. He’s looking for a bold red wine to go with his pasta, meat, or beer nuts. A great white wine to drink on a warm afternoon while he’s watching a game or attending an outdoor concert. A wine he can enjoy with his family, and a wine that will impress his wine snob friends and change the mind of his beer drinking pals.
You know the occasion he will drink it with. Father’s Day is the occasion to buy it for him. Here are the wines to do it with:
THE BBQ WINE
Moric Neckenmarkter 2003
$28.99
The BBQ WineThe self-styled village wine 2003 Blaufrankisch Neckenmarkter combines blackberry and cooked strawberry with brown spices and high-toned cherry pit and almond enters in the nose, then comes to the palate astonishingly juicy and crunchy for this torrid vintage, combining a creamy texture and leesy adjuncts with clear, pure black fruit and a chalky mineral finishing character.

THE MEAT WINE
Wenzel Bandkraften Blaufrankisch 2001 $24.99
The Meat Wine92 points Wine & Spirits
Fragrant aromas of leather, clove and sandalwood above silky strawberry and sour cherry fruit. It still has some austere tannins, but the fruit has matured to develop an alluring, softly textured complexity. Pair it with a flank steak to smooth out the tannins and complement the secondary flavors.

THE BOLD CHARDONNAY
Velich Tiglat Chardonnay 2002 $54.99
The Bold Chardonnay96 points Falstaff Wine Guide
Scents of fine herbs, but zesty citrus fruits too; the highly expansive palate exudes elegant extract sweetness supported by a lovely fresh structure rife with tropical fruit flavors; gorgeously forcused, already quite approachable; its seemingly unending finish ends with an almost salty impression. The best Tiglat since 1997. Great aging potential.
92 points A La Carte
Full, dense, and furnished with beautiful fruit. Shows a lot of pressure on the palate, with the fruit showing perfectly. A beautiful Chardonnay.
“Makes one helluva contribution to any blind tasting of Chardonnays.” -David Schidknecht, Wine Advocate

Moric Alte Reben Lutzmannsberg 2003 $76.99
The Better-Than-Thou Wine90 points Wine Advocate
Blaufrankisch vinified as if it were Grand Cru Burgundy
9/9.5 (out of 10) Vinography.com
Medium ruby in the glass, this wine has a supple, velvety nose of cherry, red currant, and mixed herbs. In the mouth it offers a gorgeous mix of woody cedar and forest floor flavors, with notes of anise around a core of tart raspberry flavor. The tannic structure is very light, but enough to give the wine some grip in the mouth as it sits perfectly balanced on the tongue, with excellent acidity that propels the wine to a lovely finish. To an inattentive taster this might be a dead ringer for a great Pinot, but the wine has something darker and mysterious going on that prevents you from betting your life savings that it’s a Burgundy.
